The Funny Side to Life (Part 2)

Hello and welcome back everyone! Thank you everyone who keeps this blog space alive even after my hiatus and irregular content updates. Let's begin with two more short stories. Enjoy!

I have had many adventures with a dear friend of mine, Marzuqi. He has been my friend for over 10 years already and was in the same school with me from Dunman Sec to Temasek JC to Military Police days. Whenever I am out with him, almost nothing ever goes right but thanks to him I had the most craziest of adventures. The first of which was at NUS.

When we were in J1, we planned to head over to NUS to support the TJC Bahas team who was competing in a national Malay Debate Competition called Bahas 4PM. . We had no idea how big the campus was so when we saw part of NUS, we immediately alighted from the bus. If I remember the venue correctly, the competition was held at Kent Ridge Hall and we alighted extremely far from it. As it was during the holidays, the whole of NUS was deserted and we could not ask anyone for directions. There literally was no one at all. Thus began our 2 hour long hike around NUS. Using Google Maps, we thought we could take a short cut. We ended up trespassing several fenced buildings, climbed numerous staircases and back down again and finally landed in the middle of a long stretch of road. That road was weird. There were dilapidated, rundown houses to the sides of the unkempt road and it seemed to stretch for miles. I thought we stepped through a time portal or something but clearly we were two lost sheep in a deserted campus. I have no idea how but we managed to finally reach the venue only to find that the entire first round of debate was over hahaha.

The second time we got lost was nothing short of epic. Marzuqi was kind enough to follow me all the way to Punggol Beach as we recce for a perfect spot for my first date. When we were done surveying, instead of heading back by bus via the same way we came from, we decided to walk towards Punggol Waterway thinking there might be a faster route back. You know, I have no idea why but it did not occur to us to use the Google Maps on our phones back then. We just walked and talked and walked. We walked for miles and came upon this road that was closed. It was a three lane road but the entrance of it was cordoned off. Somewhere in the far distance along the road we saw HDB blocks and we thought that maybe perhaps we could take a bus there instead of U-turning and walking 30 minutes back. Again, we did not use Google Maps yet. (Why?!) So we trespassed the cordoned road and began a long journey of regret.

I am not sure how long we walked. It felt like an hour or so. All the time the HDB blocks in the distance never seemed to get any bigger and worse still, the road turned and was going the wrong direction. All the time we asked ourselves, "should we turn back?" Nah, screw that, we have walked for hours, this road must lead somewhere hahaha. Only when we were sure as hell that we were lost (I kid you not), we used our phones to locate our position. I swear, on the map, WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF A FORESTED LAND! The road we were on did not exist?! Only then did we realise the severity of our situation. I asked Marzuqi to hitch a ride to whatever vehicle that passes by only for him to retort saying that we were on a closed road, there is no bloody vehicle coming down this road. We started to U-turn and prepared for the long dreaded walk back. Five minutes of walking and guess what we saw? A mini truck cruising down the road. That was it, the next moment we were right in front of the truck desperate for a hitchhike. Turned out it was a worker's truck and they were removing some cones along the new road. They agreed to take us and send us to the nearest bustop, bless them. We got into the front cabin and then we were off, so relieved and grateful for these angels. They told us that the road was going to be opened next week. That sure put a sweet end to what we thought was going to be one of the worst adventures.

Marzuqi and I had many crazy moments together too but that shall have to wait another day of storytelling. He have been one of the most inspiring friends I ever had and was always there for me. I am so grateful to have such a friend which was why it was funny when there was one time we sat the entire length of the train ride from Bedok all the way to Buona Vista next to each other without ever realising it. All the while I was uncomfortable that this random stranger was sort of glancing at my phone hahahaha. And we only realised we were sitting next to each other at the same time too. Totally epic, I couldn't stop laughing till the next day. I guess that's the only time left for me. I've attached a photo of Marz and me below from the time we were in JC. Back then he was MCS President and I was serving as his Treasurer. It's funny how I was still serving under him when we were in NS hahaha.
