In Mahayana Bhuddism, there is this belief in 'bodhisattvas' which are people who have reached the ultimate goal of all humankind, that is, attaining nirvana. Attaining nirvana means being free from all sufferings associated to this world. However, out of compassion for the rest of humanity, they choose to return to the cycle of suffering or "samsara" until everyone else have attained nirvana.

Would you take the ultimate sacrifice to save people you don't even know?

A bodhisattva is one who will suffer an eternity even if it gives comfort to a person for a mere second.

There is a huge difference between doing good to save yourself in the afterlife or to get praises and to do good because it is the right thing.
