Why wasn't I Listening?

Closed my eyes and listened...
Loud shrills from an insect coming from the left,
I opened my eyes and now I hear three,
Two more further away,
Why wasn't I listening?

Closed my eyes and listened...
Now there was a cacophony of insects,
Four and Five, maybe more.
I opened my eyes and a car drove past,
Its engine blasting in the night sky
Why hadn't I heard that?

Closed my eyes, took a breath and listened,
Ah, there's another car and ah, there are the insects,
I opened my eyes and there were not one car,
There were three,
But fainter the further they were.

There is a difference between hearing and listening.
We often only want to listen to what we want to hear,
But never hear what we ought to listen.
