Devil's Luck
Sometimes you wish so hard for some things to happen. A miracle. You close your eyes. You beg. You pray to God. You clench your fist with heart pounding like crazy. And then, it happens. the Devil's Luck. An irony to call something miraculous and yet associate it with the devil. You cannot believe it just happened. It could be the day your mother broke out of a coma. Or the day you got accepted into a prestigious university. The day you finally met your long lost sibling. Or the day you made it past a choir audition. It happens and it is no coincidence. "S*it just happens", quoted from the movie Knowing.
Luck just doesn't come. recently, i attended a student leadership congress at my college and a guest speaker said these words "the more hardworking you are, the luckier you get" and I dare say it is true in a way. Did you really think that those who had put their savings in apple or Google shares a few years ago were by chance? That Van Persie's goal is just plain lucky? That striking the lottery is pure fairy-like miraculous? The way things happen against the odds is because you have severely underestimated the odds in the first place. Never underestimate yourself. Ever,
Hence, I would like to end this with a little about myself. Currently, I am a goalkeeper playing for the Temasek Junior College soccer team. I am not really the main team player actually, mostly a benchwarmer because my true commitments lies in another of my Co-Curriculum Activity, the MCS. How I got into this soccer team even I do not know. hell, I can't hold the ball longer than 5 seconds or even balance the ball more than 5 times in the air and as keeper the ball have rolled into the net more times during training than I have ever given a goal kick. Pathetic you think? Let me put it in another word. I made it into the A level squad early this year when 3/4 of the other players did not. I have three "Man of the Match" titles to my name in a year. I have never let in a single goal into my own net except penalties during any important game for the past 3 years. Luck of the devil? maybe.
When i was younger, I wasn't an outspoken person and I never had much or any friend. Instead of hanging out with friends outside, I spent the days playing penalties with my brother at home with a rubber ball. Years and years we spent most of our time switching roles from kicker to keeper and I guess that is where I first built my reflexes first. then, in secondary school I joined table tennis and catching a small ball at lightning fast speed does help further in reflexes and timing. From then on, well, I learn not to catch a ball but to ensure it does not go behind you. the first ball i caught was during the class match 4A vs 4E. We were the underdogs, the obvious team to be thrashed 12-0 or something, no kidding. Yet, we pulled through with a 0-0 draw because of the tightest defence and some lucky saves from me. We lost in penalties later on but maybe it is because I had a shin injury from playing street soccer a few days before. i played against Victoria Secondary, St Patrick's and in the testimonial match and no goals were ever concided in my watch. That, is lucky because it hit the crossbars couple of times. the end.
